The application process consists of three steps.

1. First, provide your name and contact information.

2. Prepare and upload your application materials.
Application materials are due by December 4, 2009, and may be uploaded in one or more sessions. PDF format is preferred, but other formats will be accepted.

Application Materials Required:

A. An essay describing your inventiveness. Describe your inventiveness while at Caltech in 1,000 words or less. Please address the following (if applicable):

• Define the problems/needs and how your invention(s) offers solutions.
• What makes your invention(s) novel?
• How does your invention(s) improve upon prior technology or processes?
• What are the potential economic, environmental and societal benefits of your invention(s)?
• If you have worked in team environments, what was your role in developing key inventions?

B. Supporting files. Supporting files may include your CV, publications, documentation regarding projects you have undertaken, etc.

3. Have two letters of recommendation submitted on your behalf.
The recommendations must come from Caltech faculty or Caltech or JPL research-scientist staff. Each letter should:

• Describe the significance of the applicant's invention(s)/innovation(s) to the field
• State the student's role in developing the invention(s)
• Define the state-of-the-art status in the area of the invention(s)
• Describe potential implications of the student's work

Each letter must be submitted by December 4, 2009 via email to lemelson@caltech.edu.
